Hotspot Solutions

The growing availability of wireless Hotspot Solutions in hotels, restaurants and other public places has enabled individuals to maintain business and personal connections while on-the-road. The prevalence of wireless Internet access has raised user expectations for ubiquitous connectivity. The indoor Xspot Mark-I is a complete solution designed for Hotspot locations. Because it is wireless and license-free, you can install an Xspot Mark-I when and where you need it. The Xspot series are available in an indoor and outdoor version and uses ADSL, Cable, HSDPA- or
UMTS-backhaul.

For building Hotspot locations you can use an Xspot Mark-I, a gateway combined with an access point which acts as a single complete Hotspot. You can also add a number of wired access points to get more coverage at the location. For medium-sized or large hotpot installations you can use an access controller for 500 simultaneous sessions in combination with an indoor Xnet Viper-I node.

Direct User Control through VPN tunnel explained
The Direct User Control mechanism is a more flexible way of authenticating users than is possible with the Radius based solution.

With Direct User Control it is possible for the Radius AAA server to directly send commands to each Xspot Mark-I, Xspot 3G+ and Xspot UMTS to open and close Internet access to the network for authenticated terminals. Furthermore it is even possible change the user profile during the user session. For example, when a user is found to use excessive bandwidth during a session it is possible to lower the bandwidth in the user profile during that session.

The operation of the Xspot Mark-I, Xspot 3G+ and Xspot UMTS is similar to the Radius Authentication. Traffic can not pass-through to the Internet until the user of a certain terminal (identified by IP and/or MAC address) has authenticated himself. For the authentication process the Xspot Mark-I, Xspot 3G+ and Xspot UMTS captures the first HTTP request the terminal sends and redirects the terminal’s browser usually to a HTTPS-secured authentication page where the user name and password information is entered. After the successful authentication the server opens Internet access to the network for the authenticated terminal by sending Direct User Control commands through a secure VPN tunnel.
