The Hopling brand dates back to 2003 when it pioneered many of the basic technologies that have driven the wireless mesh revolution over the last 5 years. This intellectual leadership remains part of the brand’s DNA as we continue to introduce wireless technologies to our customers, some of whom have continued in partnership with us from the start of our company. Today, Hopling Networks is a manufacturer of state-of-the-art Hotspots, Mesh networking, WiMAX ready and Mobile WiMAX equipment for enterprises, operators and service providers.

Frank Koopman, CEO

Hopling Networks is the leader in wireless mesh technology

The Hopling Metro Topology solution enables seamless metropolitan and event-based coverage, leveraging the advantages of Mobile WiMAX, wireless Mesh, WiFi Access and Gigabit WiFi such as mobility, high throughput, low cost, and the ubiquity of client devices. With the introduction of automatic self-configurable wireless indoor and outdoor nodes, enterprises can deploy a wireless network solution in a matter of hours without the need for per node wiring or installation specialists.

The company's superior HopWARE wireless mesh solution deploys an innovative method for routing IP packets between nodes. Simply adding another node will extend the range of the wireless metropolitan area network thus creating a seamless broadband internet network. HopMAX Mobile WiMAX 802.16e solutions will give even faster Internet, VoIP and mobile TV services, immediately expanding the coverage area to previously unreachable residential and business customers.

Mesh networks with wireless access have proven their merits in providing outdoor coverage in metropolitan areas. Mesh networks entail connecting clusters of base stations (today capable of handling wireless Mesh and wireless Access) to a backhaul network for fewer interconnections and significantly lower transport costs. Traditional WiFi uses unlicensed spectrum, so interference from other local equipment in the same spectrum may affect actual wireless Access performance, but wireless Mesh (the backbone of the mesh network) and wireless Access are both today also available as a carrier-grade wireless access method in the licensed bands.

While today’s licensed and unlicensed mesh networks are based on wireless Mesh (the backbone of the mesh network), WiFi Access and in the near future Gigabit WiFi, Mobile WiMAX is expected to play a role in the future. Although traditional Mobile WiMAX architecture calls for a cabled backhaul connection to each base station, innovative companies like Hopling Networks are looking to adapt Mobile WiMAX base stations for operation as wireless mesh nodes.

HDP explained
The patented Hopling Discovery Protocol (HDP) is a means for HDP-based products (currently Hopling Networks only) to exchange information, thus enabling a device to configure itself for optimal communication with a neighboring HDP-based product. As an additional benefit, it allows mechanics and NOC technicians to get a view of the network – as the devices see it (which is not necessarily the network as its designer intended), as well as obtaining information about the availability or performance of a device. In order to maintain security, any data exchanged between nodes is encrypted.
